Thomas Tuchel finds Ben Chilwell replacement as Chelsea prepare for £73m January transfer swoop

Welcome to our football.london CareFree Chelsea daily news round-up. Maybe not the first, we’ve definitely done transfer round-ups before, and European round-ups, so I guess in some ways it’s not that new at all.

Anyway, we thought we would enter the world of football in a broad and roundabout manner for you and have some fun with some of the stories and captions doing the daily rounds.

The Blues have a hectic couple of days in the pipeline as Europe’s elite plot their raids of Stamford Bridge as Thomas Tuchel finds his Ben Chilwell replacement.

Dortmund enter race for Christensen

According to chief German football journalist at BILD Christian Falk, Borussia Dortmund has reportedly emerged as a potential destination for Blues defender Andreas Christensen.

Falk’s report claims that the 25-year-old was in healthy talks with Chelsea in the summer regarding a new contract but, since November, the Dane has a new agent who is talking with interested clubs again.

Our view: The way the Dane’s managed his contract situation at Stamford Bridge hasn’t been great, according to widespread reports, hampering his relationship with the fans.

Chelsea risks repeating a Kevin De Bruyne situation, but I think Christensen’s ship has sailed in west London – I wouldn’t be surprised to see him leave.

Barcelona eye triple Chelsea raid

According to the Spanish per Sport (via Fichajes, Barcelona is plotting a triple swoop for Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

The trio each see their contracts expire at the end of the season, making them available for a cut-price this month or a free transfer in the summer subject to a pre-contract agreement.

Fichajes claim that the Catalan side is looking for cost-cutting opportunities in their uncertain financial climate.

Our view: I’d like all three to stay. However, each potential departure would tell its own story; Azpilicueta would have his hero’s farewell, Rudiger would be fondly remembered as the ideal reference point for any subsequent signing, but Christensen would have a sour exit.

However, if all three are thinking of leaving, then Chelsea must cut their losses now. They have a combined Transfermarkt value of £72.9 million, which could be challenging to recuperate considering their deals, but it’s certainly better than nothing if push comes to shove.

Blues identify Chilwell cover

Chelsea have taken an interest in Anderlecht defender Sergio Gomez, according to TEAMtalk.

Gomez has impressed under Vincent Kompany this season, directly contributing towards 16 goals and assists from left-back in just 21 Jupiler Pro League games.

In the summer, he joined the Belgian side from Borussia Dortmund and has thrived since converting from a central-midfielder to a full-back.

Our view: I think this would be an excellent transfer for Chelsea. I’ve been following Gomez’s progress via the Football Talent Scout on Twitter; the Spaniard has been converted from a centre-midfielder to a left-sided full-back, making him the perfect signing that can cover two roles.

In doing so, the 21-year-old can always make himself available for game time in either position, meaning he can get the minutes he needs to grow while also allowing Chilwell to excel.
