Aston Villa to seal Coventry City transfer for ‘significant’ fee

Aston Villa are on the verge of sealing the transfer of Coventry City youngster Thierry Katsukunya.

According to The Athletic, Katsukunya is close to penning a move to Villa with the 16-year-old set to cost the club a “significant” fee of six figures.

Katsukunya is with City’s Under-18s and is another signing to add to Villa ‘s youth ranks at Bodymoor Heath.

Villa signed Tim Iroegbunam from West Bromwich Albion and have also moved for Louie Barry from their Midlands rivals within the last couple of years.

Declan Frith recently signed from Chelsea with Mark Harrison, Villa’s academy manager, looking to bring in players to add to the talent already being developed at Bodymoor.

Villa have developed players for the club’s first-team from the academy with Jacob Ramsey, Carney Chukwuemeka, Cameron Archer and Jaden Philogene-Bidace all making the step up.

In appointing Steven Gerrard as Dean Smith’s replacement when he was sacked in November, Villa chief executive Christian Purslow said that the Liverpool legend’s experience in his old side’s academy was key.

“I think it was an inspirational idea that when he was transitioning out of playing to coaching at Liverpool that he was given full responsibility of his own team, the under-18s,” Purslow said.

“The academy and youth football is the central feature of our strategy for this football club.

Gerrard was pictured at VIlla Under-23s’ game against Burnley on Monday night, taking a keen interest in the performances of the club’s young players.
